A W really is just two Vs. Now I can’t unsee it every time I see a W. Or is it a VV. Wait, we call it a ‘Double U’, right? But it’s a Double V. Why do we call it this -> UU when we make it look like this -> VV? Oh god look at all the double Vs/Double Us/Double whatevers in this paragraph. THAT LETTER IS RUINED FOR ME NOW FOREVER

I had a co-worker a while back who drove one of these.

The license plate read “V UU”.

The figures for U and V used to be switched, so when W was named, it really was two joined Us, they just wrote them as Vs back then.

In Spanish it’s said “doble v” which translates to double v if that helps.

Auf Deutsch.. Duppel-Vey “Double V” and most of the “commoner” English has Germanic roots. Flowery and “proper” English is mostly French. Thank the Norman invasion of the Saxons for that one. Royalty spoke French and the poors spoke German. It’s also why crass words in English are closer to German while the polite form is French. Piss/Urinate, Puke/Vomit all that...

Comes from Latin. There are no U’s in Latin, so U’s are replaced by V’s. Double U’s in Latin would be written VV, hence the W (double U).

Have you ever heard Germans say W? Have you ever heard Germans say BMW? Fascinating.

I was told that the W is written that way because straight lines are easier to carve than curved ones, so a double u was always carved as w and it carried over into print.

More proof that you actually are a time traveling gaming/entertaining system. I figured that everyone asked this in, or before, elementary school. ;)

In french, it’s pronounced “double v”. So that’s correct
